MUSKEGON SUMMER CELEBRATION
Line-up Nearing Completion
MUSKEGON, MI, May 10, 2006 – The Muskegon Summer Celebration, the BIG Party, announces more Miller Lite Headline Artists set to appear on the Chrysler Jeep Dodge Main Stage during the 2006 festival, June 29 - July 9. David Lee Roth, Alice Cooper, Shinedown, Trapt, Macy Gray, and Ginuwine join the previously announced Smash Mouth, Sugarland, and the Steve Miller Band. “Even though our second announcement is later than normal, we still believe the final line up will be completed prior to next week’s Sappi Pass Party. We understand our patrons not wanting to commit to buying the pass without knowing the complete line-up,” said Joe Austin, Executive Director.
One of the most famous and infamous names in the history of Rock ‘n’ Roll appears on Friday, June 30, when David Lee Roth jumps onto the stage. While born in Indiana, David Lee Roth, also spent a great deal of his time in New York at his uncle’s (Manny Roth) night club Café Wha?. Here he began his entertainment education seeing the likes of Bob Dylan, Richard Pryor, Peter, Paul, and Mary and Lenny Bruce. Eventually his family moved to California and while performing in his own band, the Red Ball Jets, he met Eddie and Alex Van Halen. Along with Michael Anthony they formed the super group Van Halen. From 1978 – 1984 Van Halen took the rock world by storm. In 1985 David Lee Roth left as lead singer of Van Halen to pursue a solo career. He has since released eights albums producing the hits “California Girls,” “Just A Gigolo/Ain’t Got Nobody,” “Just Like Paradise,” “Stand Up,” and “Yankee Rose.”
Alice Cooper makes his Summer Celebration debut on Sunday, July 2. Vincent Damon Furnier began his musical career in the 60’s with a group called the Earwigs. After changing the group’s name to the Spiders and then the Nazz, they found critical acclaim after a move to Detroit. Furnier then changed the band’s name to Alice Cooper and eventually assumed that moniker himself. The 1970’s was the boon period for the band, but Alice Cooper continues to release albums including last year’s Dirty Diamonds and Live at Cabo Wabo 96. Some of the greatest hits include, “School’s Out,” “Welcome to My Nightmare,” “No More Mr. Nice Guy,” “Only Women,” “Under My Wheels,” and “You And Me.”
Cutting edge rock is featured on Monday, July 3, with Shinedown and Trapt making their Muskegon debut. Hailing from Jacksonville, Florida, Shinedown released their first album, Leave a Whisper, in 2003 and followed up in 2005 with their sophomore effort, Us and Them, in 2005. Both albums produced several hits including “Simple Man,” “45,” “Fly From the Inside,” “Burning Bright,” “Save Me,” and “I Dare You,” both currently on the Mainstream and Modern Rock charts. Trapt has been one of the most successful breakout bands in the rock world in the last two years. Their eclectic sound inspired one critic to describe Trapt as equal parts of Korn, Metallica, Soundgarden, and Pink Floyd. Formed in southern California in the late 90’s, Trapt’s two Warner Brothers releases have charted the singles “Stand Up,” “Still Frame,” “Headstrong,” “Echo,” and Waiting.”
On Thursday, July 6, contemporary R&B performer Macy Gray brings her unique vocal stylings to the Muskegon Summer Celebration. She studied a wide range of music while growing up, and actually got her start quite by accident. She had agreed to write the lyrics for a musician friend’s songs, and when a demo was scheduled to record those songs, the musician failed to show, so Macy recorded them herself. One of the songs was never overdubbed, and when the tapes began making the rounds, her voice caught the attention of many. Her first album, On How Life Is, was released in 1999. She was nominated for two Grammys that year, but it wasn’t until 2000 that Macy Gray won a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. She has recorded with several artists including Black-Eyed Peas, Fatboy Slim, and Slick Rick, and guested on Santana’s album, Shaman. As an actress, she has appeared in the Denzel Washington police drama, Training Day, and Spider-Man. Her best known songs are, “Do Something,” “I Try,” “Why Didn’t You Call Me,” and “Sweet Baby.” Opening for Macy Gray is Ginuwine. Known as one of the real “love men” of hip hop soul, Ginuwine’s debut album, The Bachelor, jump-started his career. His latest album, Back II Da Basics, was released last year, and is currently charting the hit single, “I’m in Love.” Other big hits from Ginuwine are “Pony,” “So Anxious,” “Differences,” “Hell Yeah,” and “In Those Jeans.’
