| Editorial Reviews: | | | | | Marpac Sound Screen & SleepMate 980 combines American ingenuity and craftsmanship to create a lightweight, yet durable appliance capable of many years of reliable service. Marpac sound conditioners create a consistent, smooth sound of rushing air. The tone and volume of the sound are controlled by simply rotating the "cap" and "collar" of the housing. This "white noise" sound effectively masks unwanted noises and creates a sense of calm, making it easier to concentrate, relax and/or sleep. These sound conditioners are recommended for restless sleepers, shift workers, infants, children, students, apartment dwellers, office workers (for confidentiality) and many others. The dual speed 980 is made of durable plastic housing suitable for travel or use in the home or office. | |

| My husband finally sleeps well!! | |
| | I gave this to my insomniac husband as a gift, and was worried he wouldn't like it. It was also more expensive than other machines, so I felt I was taking a big chance.
I'm glad I went with a machine where we could adjust the pitch. It's surprising how irritating certain pitches and sounds can be. We messed with it and found the perfect pitch for both of us.
Now that we have used it for a couple months, this has turned out to be one of the best gifts I have ever given him. He never wants to sleep without it. I'd highly recommend it!
| | | works very nicely, only gave it 4 stars though, cuz i think it should cost $10-15 less.
| | Works great, easy to transport, steady noise. | |
| | Great item. First, the star reduction:
I bought three of these and used them basically every night for over six months, they all worked great out of the box, but one has recently lost a little of noise decibel and shakes slightly. The noise reduction is minor but noticeable because we use all three in different rooms. The shaking can be annoying because it can move slightly on smooth surfaces and it creates a disruption in the static noise that the unit creates. I have not contacted the manufacturer yet, but based on a 1 on 3 ratio, I'm a little disappointed. I will adjust the rating based on my experience with the manufacturer.
That being said, they work great, I've used a wattage reader on them compared to the fans we were using before these. These are much better options over fans, obviously excluding air movement. The noise is much smoother, and in my opinion, easier on the ears. The wattage use on low is about 8-9 watts an hour while high runs steady at 17 watts an hour. My medium sized box fans run about 60/80/100 watts an hour on low/med/high, respectively.
I highly recommend if you need/want white noise for sleep, I'm very pleased I purchased these and glad I'm saving money by replacing the fans.

| | My husband snores and I live near a freeeway! Once or twice a night I wake up by one or the other. I have no problem going back to sleep but would love to have a night of uninterupted sleep. I heard about sound machines from a friend, did a little online research and decided to try the Marpac Sleepmate. The first week the machine "noise" actually woke me up a few times, but I stuck with it. Now its been about a month, I have had many nights of uninterupted sleep. The only change has been the addition of this machine to our room at night so I guess it worked.
| | | I just started working nights, and this has been great for helping me sleep during the day. I am no longer woken up by loud cars in the street outside my window, or by the garbage and recycling trucks. Airplanes still wake me, but I fall back to sleep much faster with this on. Highly recommend!
